My recent research has centered on both the sociology of sport and the media sport cultural complex and I have published extensively within these areas. I am particularly interested in the manner in which spaces of sports consumption and rituals of fandom in Asia are marked by global cultural flows while at the same time being reconstituted within Asian socio-cultural contexts. Sport has emerged as a prominent sector of the nascent Asian media and leisure economies which are emblematic of the extensive economic and cultural modernization experienced across much of the continent. My research explores the manner in which sports consumption in Asia engenders a form of global aspirational cosmopolitanism that is reflective of wider emergent consumptive lifestyle modes amongst Asia’s rapidly growing middle classes. To this end, I am currently investigating cultures of consumption and modes of cultural adaptation surrounding the English Premier League in Southeast Asia.  In addition I am exploring an interest in urban sociology via an investigation of the social role of consumptive spaces in Petaling Jaya. My PhD dissertation which I am currently completing, examines the role that genre and industrial factors play in both facilitating and hindering the transnational flow of television and film, and addresses the emergence within Asia of geo-regional, geo-linguistic, and geo-cultural modes of television consumption.

I have previously been employed in both research and teaching positions at the Queensland University of Technology, University of Newcastle, and the University of Western Sydney, and my research and teaching interests span the disciplines of media studies, cultural studies, and sociology.
