Research Degrees

General Information

At Monash, a research degree is a postgraduate degree comprising 66% or 100% research.  The research is presented and assessed as a thesis.  The aim of a research degree is to produce an originial work of scholarship that will contirbute substantially to the understanding of the subject matter.

What We Offer ?

COURSES BY THESIS ONLY (100% RESEARCH):

  • Masters of Arts (MA)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

  § Master of Arts

The Master of Arts degree enables students to undertake substantial (30,000 to 40,000 words) independent research on a chosen topic while under the supervision of an expert academic. The period of candidature is two years full-time or four years part-time. Student can start their candidature at any time of the year.

Admission Requirements:

  • a four year Australian or New Zealand bachelors degree with an overall result of H2A (Upper Second Class Honours) or above (normally with a research component in the fourth year), or
  • an Australian or New Zealand masters preliminary qualification with a significant research component and with an overall result of distinction or above, or
  • an Australian or New Zealand coursework masters degree with a significant research component graded at distinction or above, and an overall result of distinction or above, or
  • an Australian or New Zealand research masters degree with an overall result of H2A (Upper Second Class Honours) or above, or
  • a qualification considered equivalent to one of the above.
  • and to meet the university’s English language requirements.

§ Doctor of Philosophy

The PhD program offered enables candidates to complete extensive, independent research (maximum 100,000 words) under the supervision of an expert academic.  When completed, this research must make a valuable contribution to the current body of knowledge on their chosen topic. The period of candidature is three years full-time or 6 years part-time. Student can start their candidature at any time of the year.

Admission Requirements:

  • a four year Australian or New Zealand bachelors degree with an overall result of H2A (Upper Second Class Honours) or above (normally with a research component in the fourth year), or
  • an Australian or New Zealand masters preliminary qualification with a significant research component and with an overall result of distinction or above, or
  • an Australian or New Zealand coursework masters degree with a significant research component graded at distinction or above, and an overall result of distinction or above, or
  • an Australian or New Zealand research masters degree with an overall result of H2A (Upper Second Class Honours) or above, or
  • a qualification considered equivalent to one of the above.
