July 2012- The School of Arts and Social Sciences participated in the 8th International Malaysian Studies Conference held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 9-11 July, 2012. The theme of the conference was “Transition and Transformation: State, Market and Culture in a Period of Rapid Change”.  

Organized by the Malaysian Social Science Association, the biennially held Malaysian Studies conference is the premier academic gathering in the country drawing in both local and foreign-based scholars from around the world. Around 150 papers covering a wide range of sub-themes were presented in 4 parallel sessions.SASS sponsored an institutional panel entitled “New Media, New Malaysia?” which looked at how social media has influenced social and political change in the country. Convened by Dr Yeoh Seng Guan, the SASS panelists comprised Dr Julian Hopkins, Mr Tan Meng Yoe and Professor James Chin. Dr Joanne Lim (Nottingham University) made up the remaining member of the panel. 

Other SASS members (staff and students) present at MSC8 to speak about their research were Dr Wong Chin Huat, Dr Linda Quayle, Ms Alina Mohd Khalid, and Ms Caryn Lim.
